Warning after officers called to reservoir |
||
|
We are reminding people of the dangers of swimming in open water after officers were called to a reservoir in Stanley, near Leek. We were called just after 4pm yesterday (Wednesday 24 June) to Stanley Pool on Puddy Lane following reports of six teenagers in the water. Officers attended the scene alongside colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. The teenagers got out of the water when officers arrived and thankfully did not need rescuing. Inspector Joel Hurst, from the Staffordshire Moorlands local policing team (LPT) said: “Stanley pool is a popular location for young people during periods of hot weather, but I would remind them that the pool has several strong currents under the water, making it unsafe. “Whilst open water might seem inviting, there are hidden dangers and is often much colder than you expect, making it hard to swim.” Head of Prevent, Protect and Partnerships at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Nick Jones, said: “If you see someone or a pet in trouble in the water, do not try and rescue them yourself, call 999 immediately and where possible use the What3Words app to pinpoint your location. “If you get into difficulty in the water lie back with your arms and legs extended and float, avoid thrashing.
